Creatine Isn't Just for the Gym Anymore

Creatine has an image problem, and the image is a gym bag.

For thirty years it's been filed under sports supplement — the white powder in the tub, the thing you take to lift heavier. It's arguably the most-studied supplement in existence, with a mountain of evidence behind it, and virtually all of that mountain is about muscle.

But muscle isn't the only tissue in your body that runs on creatine. Your brain does too. And that fact is starting to get a lot more attention.

What creatine actually does

It's a recycling system for energy.

Your cells run on ATP. When a cell does work, ATP gets spent, and it needs to be regenerated fast. Creatine — stored as phosphocreatine — is the buffer that does that regeneration, handing over a phosphate group to rebuild ATP on demand.

That's why it works for lifting: your muscles need explosive energy, and creatine makes the resupply faster.

Now consider which other organ in your body is a spectacular energy hog. Your brain is roughly 2% of your body weight and consumes something like 20% of your energy. It is, in ATP terms, the most demanding tissue you own.

The question researchers have been circling: if creatine buffers energy in muscle, what's it doing up there?

Where the research actually is

Honestly? Interesting, and not settled. We'd rather tell you that than oversell it.

The most consistent findings show up where the brain is under energetic stress — sleep deprivation, mental fatigue, high cognitive load. That pattern makes mechanistic sense: a buffer matters most when the system is running short.

There's also a thread of research suggesting something more specific and more useful: the brain may take up creatine more slowly and more reluctantly than muscle does. Muscle saturates readily at the standard 5g/day. The brain appears to be harder to reach — which would imply that a dose optimized for muscle may not be a dose optimized for the mind.

That's a hypothesis, not a verdict. It's exactly the kind of thing that gets overstated in supplement marketing, and we're not going to do that.

The uncomfortable implication

If the brain really is harder to saturate than muscle, then a very large number of people are in an odd position: already taking creatine, and possibly already leaving something on the table.

Not because they're doing it wrong. Because they're doing it for muscle — and the dose that's optimal for muscle was never designed to answer the second question.
